Heavy winds and bad water conditions have put a damper on angling and on the Sardine fever this week. Not much sardine netting took place this week due to Mother Nature drawing the curtain for us on the KZN Coastline. South Coast
Catches of shad are still prolific along the South Coast beaches. Splash Rock and Lucky Dip are still producing Garrick and Kob. Some very decent specimens Kob have been taken at night. Orange Rocks and Potholes had little action with just shad making an appearance. Fair sized Bronze Breams have been taken on the lower South Coast recently. Anglers targeting these fish had the best results on red prawn. Green Point seems to be of the hotspots this season with regards to Shad. Some phenomenal sizes have been recorded here. Bazley and Sezela had some action with shad, karanteen and some big blacktails. Scottburgh and Winkels had some action last weekend with guys getting stuck into some Grey Sharks at Scotties. Winkels however is still producing the best catches of Garrick this season. Toti and Isipingo had some Shad caught in the mornings.

Every anglers wish on the KZN Coast has been answered this year with regards to the Sardines making a prolonged stay. If the Sardines plan on staying at the Ushaka and Addington area until this weekend it will surely be a record. South Coast
The best fishing in years has been experienced on the South Coast in the past few weeks. Although the Sharks have been scarce the edibles have certainly been on a bonus run. Shad has grown not only in numbers but also in size. Reports from our local South Coast guru suggest that the locals are leaving the beaches very happy. A live shad off Splash Rock or Lucky Dip will certainly entice the mighty Garrick. Some reports of Bronze Bream have also surfaced in these areas. Orange Rocks and Potholes had the same result through most of thee week as well. Kob were reported to be taken at night at these well known hotspots. Umkomaas North Bank has is hotting up with phenomenal catches recently. Yellowtail Kingfish in the 5kg range has got the attention of many anglers who are braving the early morning cold to get these fish. Shad has been prolific in the early mornings and afternoons. Some decent size Kob and Grunter were also reported to be taken at night. Winkels is still in the ultimate hotspot with Garrick being taken in good numbers. Any live bait in the water will certainly show some results. Fellow KZN Fishing member David managed a 9kg Garrick at Toti this pass weekend in extreme weather conditions.

Well, spring is almost upon us and the sardines seem to have proven all the theories about their activity wrong thus far and are still hanging around the Durban Beachfront. This area has been an absolute hive of activity this past week, with regular sardine nettings and some trophy catches being recorded. South Coast The South Coast has been throwing a fair bit of fish, but cant seem to outshine the Durban Central area. Regular catches of Garrick and shad have been reported from the Port Edward area, with the gullies around Splash Rock, giving the light tackle angler some fun, with decent catches of karanteen’s and blacktails, with the odd bronze bream been reported. A few reports have come in from the Orange Rocks area, where the odd Garrick is still showing up, with some decent catches of kob in the evenings. The Port Shepstone area has seen some size shad being landed in between the regular morning and afternoon catches. The Bazley, Sezela area, has had very few reports coming in, but shad, and gully fish seem to be the order of the day. |
